Week 1 - LTEC 5510 - Article reflections

Write a blog reflection about what you learned from your three readings and note items, theories, and elements that you would like to know more about and whether it impacts your design or tells you more about how you learn.

The first article talked in-depth about an example and look at Problem Based Learning, and how it’s iterative process works with the constructive theory of learning.  I really liked, and use as often as I can, the idea of putting learners in an authentic situation where they are “constructors of their own knowledge in a context which is similar to the context in which they would apply that knowledge.” (Savery, Duffy 1995) I like it’s real world application process, where all of the learning revolves around solving a problem.

The 2nd article that I choose to do some research on is a study of the effectiveness of discussion forums in online learning vs face to face learning.  The learning I took from this is while the goal of a discussion is the same in both online and face to face, the types of students who willingly participate are different in each.  This is an encouraging findings, as I am always looking for find different ways to reach all of my students the way that challenges them, but doesn’t trigger that “fight or flight” mentality.  Using online discussion boards in as a part of the constructivism project based learning from reading one has the potential to really yield some interesting results in an online/hybrid design.

The third article I researched was the one Yuri Demeny shared titled “Blended leaning models for introductory programming courses: A systematic review,” by Ali Alammary.  I chose this article as I too have taught introduction to programing classes, and the information found in this article has the ability to greatly influence how I design those courses in the future.  This article does state that the mixed model of instructional design “can contribute to even better students’s performance.” (Alammary 2019)  Some of the takeaways from this article for me with regards to my future designing is how online videos of lectures were less effective than in person lectures, due to self disciple issues.  While reading this article, I found a common thread in all the learning styles analyzed was the need for differentiated instruction.  One particular way of consuming, applying, and then demonstrating knowledge is insufficient for continued learning.

I’m really glad I got to choose these three articles for this assignment, as they are all about a different part of the design process.  One is a way to theory of learning in a course (PBL), one is about a tool to use in a course to achieve desired outcomes (online discussion forum), and the last one is about the different types of classes that can be used and the different problems they present.  PBL can create a constructive learning environment, discussion forums can empower different types of students, and using a diverse method of instruction with some face-to-face elements and differentiated instruction will help me design courses in the future.
